Maternal and Child Health Week in Rwanda

Improving the health of mothers and their children as a part of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) week in Rwanda.

From June 3-7, 2024, Rwanda observed Maternal and Child Health (MCH) week, organized by the Rwanda Ministry of Heath. This event is held twice a year and aims to expand health care services coverage, especially in hard-to-reach rural areas.

The integrated MCH week is an excellent opportunity to promote healthy activities in communities, including hygiene and healthy nutrition. During this period, the population also receives some preventive and curative services, including:

  • Mass deworming

  • Vitamin A supplementation

  • Child growth monitoring

  • Routine vaccinations for children who have fallen behind

  • Family planning services

  • Screening for malnutrition

The MCH week activities were carried out in villages by Community Health Workers (CHWs) and health care providers. Local leaders provided support in order to reach more community members. In collaboration with the Rwanda Ministry of Health, Health Builders helped to coordinate and supervise the campaign in health centers, schools, and community sites.

In addition, Health Builders staff provided technical assistance to health care providers and CHWs by focusing on service and data quality. Health Builders also provided vehicles to transport medicine and supervisors to remote sites.

I am filled with deep gratitude for the Health Builders’ team in Rulindo for their unwavering support during the MCH week. Their dedication in supervising technically the MCH week activities in health centers and remote community sites, as well as their crucial assistance in transporting district and hospital supervisors to different sites and other commodities for the MCH activities, has made an immeasurable difference. Thank you, Health Builders, for your truly remarkable support.
