Health care solutions for Rwandans, by Rwandans

With leadership, staff, and key partners located in Rwanda, Health Builders is able to provide health care systems that fit the community needs. We are proud to be leading change in the communities where we live.

How we work

Since 2007, Health Builders has collaborated closely with the local and national governments in Rwanda to build lasting health systems so all Rwandans have access to quality health care.

These partnerships help Health Builders create health care infrastructure that is locally built, right-sized for each community, and designed to endure the test of time.

Where we work

Currently, Health Builders focuses on three rural districts in Rwanda serving more than 1 million people. Our headquarters in Kigali allows staff to easily move between districts while also ensuring that leadership can meet regularly with the Ministry of Health and other governmental and non-governmental partners.

A long and respected history in Rwanda

2007

Rwanda Works was created by Josh Ruxin, also the founder of Access Project (2002), with the support of Rob Glaser and Jeffrey Sachs. The goal of the Access Project was to improve health care in Rwanda by increasing management capacity at health centers. On the other side, Rwanda Works was established to implement infrastructure projects.

2008

Rwanda Works begins construction of the first state-of-the-art health center in the Gashora sector in the Eastern Province of Rwanda.

2013

Rwanda Works was rebranded as Health Builders to fully encompass the three pillars of mentoring and training, technology and equipment, and infrastructure under one umbrella.

2014

Health Builders installs an oxygen plant at the Ruhengeri Hospital in the Northern Province of Rwanda providing more than 3.5 million Rwandans with medical oxygen.

2019

Health Builders focuses efforts on improving the quality of care, especially for maternal and child health. This includes training of nurses and community health workers on integrated management and childhood illnesses (IMCI) and integrated community case management (ICCM). Health Builders also begins training the youth on adolescent sexual and reproductive health & rights and introduces ultrasound technology in health centers’ antenatal care services for the first time.

2020

Health Builders continues to be a vital part of the Rwanda health system under the leadership of Michel Musilikare, a Rwandan national, and his staff of Rwandan-based professionals.
