Performance Assessment Highlights

In October 2023, Health Builders shared findings from annual health center performance assessments, including exciting improvements in resource management, quality of care, and patient and staff satisfaction.

Every year our health centers undergo performance assessments that include direct observation of activities, document reviews, staff interviews, and an on-site inspection of each facility. This process is a part of Health Builders’ commitment to consistently monitor and evaluate our work.

Assessments demonstrate that improved management and clinical care leads to quality health care outcomes, while continuing to address gaps and find new ways to improve the entire health care system.

In October 2023, Health Builders hosted meetings in each of the three districts to share feedback and distribute awards to high-performing health centers. District vice mayors in charge of social affairs, hospital director generals, directors of district health units, hospital Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) teams, and head of health centers attended the meetings.

Two important areas of our mission - training and mentorship and quality of care - were highlighted in our most recent assessments.

Ms. Chantal Gahongayire, Head of AVEGA Health Center

Improved Resource Management and Quality of Care at AVEGA Health Center

Thanks to the Health Builders’ management and health care equipment support to 54 primary health centers from Rwamagana, Rulindo and Nyabihu districts, one of the health centers in Rwamagana, AVEGA, recorded increases in both areas from 2021-2022:

  • Quality of care increased by 38 percentage points (52% to 90%)

  • Resource management increased by 4 percentage points (82% to 86%)

Ms. Chantal Gahongayire, the Head of AVEGA Health Center shared a story of how the management mentorship and biomedical equipment support from Health Builders helped transform the facility:

“Our hard work, resilience and support from different partners such as Health Builders especially in improving the management of the available resources has helped us [by] building team work, transparency and improving staff welfare which are some of the key factors behind our current success… We have huge appreciations for Health Builders’ support.”

Increased Patient and Staff Satisfaction at Nyagasambu Health Center

Nyagasambu Health Center achieved a significant improvement in both staff and client satisfaction rates in 2022:

  • Staff satisfaction increased 32 percentage points (53% to 85%)

  • Client satisfaction increased 41 percentage points (44% to 85%)

These impressive improvements are attributed to the valuable support provided by Health Builders in the areas of Quality Improvement (QI) and Leadership.

Mr. Gerard Bunani, Head of Nyagasambu Health Center

Mr. Gerard Bunani, the Head of Nyagasambu Health Center, agrees:

“I believe that the main factor that contributed to the increased satisfaction of the staff is the clear and consistent communication with them about the matter related to the daily work at the health center, valuation of staff ideas and, particularly, the application of principles to effectively manage difficult people and situations in the organization as taught to me by Health Builders’ staff.”

Mr. Bunani also emphasized the significance of collecting client feedback at the health center. For example, installing a client suggestion box gave leadership insights into service issues that clients encountered at the health center. This enabled them to develop strategies for addressing these concerns.

Championing progress through evaluation

Health Builders is thrilled with the improvements in management and leadership, quality of care, and overall satisfaction of both patients and staff. But we see this as only a beginning. There is always more we can do. We look forward to using these findings as a benchmark for future years and continuing to improve health care outcomes and the health care system in rural Rwanda.
